COMMITTED TO YOUR SKIN,
AND MORE !
We have chosen to make Comptoir des Huiles a brand committed to social and environmental issues.
Deforestation on the island of Madagascar is among the most alarming in the world. Today, only 10% of the territory's original wooded areas remain.
This deforestation is the result of wild logging and the slash-and-burn agriculture technique, which consists of burning plots for clearing, fires which then spread to adjacent wild areas.
Furthermore, 84% of the Malagasy population does not have access to electricity, and cuts down trees to heat themselves or make food.
We therefore designed Comptoir des Huiles according to a sustainable and committed mode of production, in order to jointly fight against deforestation and poverty in Madagascar.
Thus, we have set up partnerships with local growers to harvest our seeds.
This allows us to generate income for these disadvantaged populations and to protect nature on the Big Island by raising awareness among residents of environmental issues.
A virtuous and participatory mode of production
Thanks to our virtuous and participatory mode of production, we promote the trees of Malagasy forests to local populations .
Aware of the impact of deforestation on nature and the climate, residents are committed to protecting the vegetation around them with us.
These educational actions have already enabled the preservation of more than 212,500 ha of wooded land.
Unfortunately, some lands in Madagascar have been completely cleared.
Far from wanting to leave these plots abandoned, we challenged ourselves to restore plant biodiversity there through the planting of Castor and Moringa Oleifera, plants which adapt perfectly to the tropical climate and the arid land and sandstone from the island of Madagascar.
For these so-called “last chance” areas, we work in close collaboration with the WWF, which strives to manage the exceptional biodiversity of the Malagasy territory in a sustainable manner, for the benefit of the environment and local populations.
The origin of our vegetable oils
The seed harvests of Comptoir des Huiles oils are concentrated in 5 regions in the south of Madagascar.
Comptoir des Huiles has set up a partnership with farmers in Madagascar to sustainably harvest the seeds for its oils. By using the seeds available in nature, we encourage the local population to consider forests differently, so as not to see them only as a charcoal resource. Farmers obtain fair income in the long term and deforestation is stopped in the areas where we harvest!
